Now that I know how to rappel on a buget, I am still confused as to what a buget is. Is a buget the name of that knot he was rappelling on, or was it that harness contraption he tied ;)

Attached to the eye bolt was 1/4-inch cotton rope. I don't think it actually got used, but someone was VERY close to visiting the ever-after.

p.s. Probably this kid's dad...

That reminds me of a trip I took to Mt. Rushmore. There's a museum there which has some of the old equipment they used when building the thing. Talk about bosun's planks, hemp ropes, and DYNAMITE. Those boys were flat out crazy. They'll probably say that about us before the next century is out, but it always makes me think about how I define risk management. But then, I'd take a 3/4 inch hemp rope over a 1/4 inch cotton rope any day of the week!

Was it the colour of manila envelopes? Because that is all I can think of now.

I wonder what the next cool invention will be...I had a dream the other night we were at some huge pit (I say "we" cause some of you forum peeps were there. I know because I was calling you by your fora-names) and we were floating down in huge bubbles. It was really easy but Dean (sorry! I didn't make it up my brain did!) was having troubles getting the composition for the air inside the bubble correctly and couldn't get down. Finally got it though. He did beat us all back up (floated up in bubbles too). I'm not sure how that would work for skinny pits though. Sorry my brain did not tell me what gasses we were using in the bubbles - really weird names that make no sense (only made sense in dreamworld).

...please don't think I"m crazy.

Well..........when I started caving in the early 60s, all we could get was Manila rope. It is made from natural fibers and is quite strong.

But, it is not as strong as modern ropes and being a natural fiber, it deteriorates more readily. Still, it is quite safe, if it is in good shape.

We went down Conley Hole (160) on 3/4 inch Manila.

Bubble caving sounds like a great idea, you'd stay warm and dry in there so no clothes needed, cleaning would be super easy. Would work great until you hit a sharp rock and go pop.

LOL I love how your brain goes to "ooh awesome we could all cave naked!"

It prevents the spread of WNS like the MAKC promotes.

Wow, I know as a young kid I had some not so sound techniques, but what that kid is doing is really bad. I feel significantly smarter now!

Way too many potentially fatal errors.

No helmet, no gloves.
"Munter hitch" (never seen one tied that way) tied to a biner that I guarantee says 'not for climbing' on the side.
Girth hitched to his anchor using a quicklink that probably cost .50 cents.
Homemade harness (nothing wrong with that if you use the right materials!) from Walmart with really sketchy stitching?
Thinking that your equipment only needs to hold 150-200 lbs...
One thing I remember from NCRC training is that if you have a ten dollar life, use ten dollar equipment.
Plus he said several times that you need to make sure that your equipment is in good shape and to check it several times... he should follow his own advice!

That's ok. he wasn't climbing, he was rappelling. ;-)

Ahh! So that's what that means. Sweet.. I can save some serious money now that I can use those keychain biners. If you use like 20 of them the rating is like 20 kW, right?

Nott to defend this retard, but he wasn't using keychain biners or the "not for climbing" biners. He was using the steel goofy shaped biners that all of the cable machines at the gym use, while they arent as strong as what we use, they are pretty damn strong. Of all the weak links in this kids chain of errors, those were the strongest link. That rope would snap before anything, or his harness would spontaneously fall apart.
