The other kind of harness hang syndrome

Postby OpenTrackRacer » Mar 22, 2011 11:10 am

You know, the one where the back of your harness hangs down behind your legs, plumber butt style? It's not nearly as deadly but can sure cause problems (not to mention embarrassment).

Okay, seriously though. I've had a few issues with this. The most serious was with my new harness from OneRope1. The chest harness connects only in the front. I was climbing ladders and the back of the harness dropped down and seriously restricted my movement. I solved it by switching back to my less-comfortable Petzl Torse and adding the length needed with a sling. It's not the most comfortable arrangement by any means.

I'd be very curious to know if anyone else has had a problem with this and how you solved it.

Thanks!

I used to have this problem with the leg loops hanging down too low at the back. This was long ago when I was skinny. :big grin: I made a couple of little webbing straps to hold the leg loops up at the back. Now I just keep my harness adjusted fairly tight, and I don't usually have a problem.

I'm having trouble visualizing the model you're talking about. Link?

There's not really a good picture. It's this harness...

The chest harness attaches via Fastex connectors located on the waist belt in front, roughly centered on each leg. There's nothing but friction to stop the rear of the harness from falling below your waist (when not on rope of course).

How tight is the waist loop? I have found that, especially with sit-stand system, the tighter the waist loop, the better. Slightly uncomfortable when off rope and difficult to connect the screwlink is about right.

I have been able to get the fractio a little tighter when putting on the half moon quick link sitting down instead of standing.May not work for everybody but does for me. Also when climbing I hang my pack from my belt instead of my harness like I have seen some people do. I wear a Petzl "last resort" belt and it is very secure for that. A leather work belt works well also.
It only takes one person to surrender a dog to a kill shelter ,but it takes many to rescue it.
