If I have taken a photograph, how could I get it in one of the NSS News magazines?

For the NSS News, submit your photo to the editor, David Bunnell. See http://www.caves.org/pub/nssnews/ and the discussion here http://www.caves.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=3589#3589

The best way to help ensure your photo will be printed is for it to accompany an article you write for the NSS News. :goodjob:
You also could enter your photos in the NSS Photo Salons http://www.caves.org/committee/salons/N ... lons.shtml and win an award, for David prints each years' medal winners.

To submit a photo for the cover of the 2006 NSS Members Manual http://www.caves.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=914

To submit a cave rescue-related photo for American Caving Accidents
http://www.caves.org/pub/aca/photos.html

For the Journal of Cave and Karst Studies, the photo likely will need to accompany a scientific paper. http://www.caves.org/pub/journal/

getting your photo in the NSS News

Postby Dave Bunnell » Jan 28, 2006 2:23 am

Cheryl gives some good info above, but note that I print more than just the salon medal winners. ALL the ribbon winners get printed from the slide Salon and as many from the Print salons as i can get ahold of (i.e., only if the entrants send them to me, hint hint). I'll also pull some off the salon disk that I think are deserving and run some of those on a space available basis.

I do get a lot of submissions of photos these days that are of the "here's some photos you might be interested in" sort. I suspect because more and more folks are using digital and its much easier to submit them than it was in the past. I often try to run such a photo or artwork in each issue on the calendar page. As for running in color, what I've done in the past and will probably do more of, is to have both Photographer's Spotlights, where I devote a color page showcasing one person's photos, and a Member's Page, where I present a variety of people's photos. The February issue has both these things. How often I run these depends mainly on how much unused color space there is, with feature articles and Salon Gallery items generally taking priority. The number of ribbons awarded in the photo salon fluctuates quite a bit, some years more than 50 and others less than 20, so space available varies accordingly.

One request for those submitting photos: please be selective. I have had people send me what appeared to be the entire output of a photo trip, with many variations on a given shot. Better to just send a few that really stand out. If in doubt, ask your friends which ones they like best.

Obviously the criteria for whether a photo gets published is different for a stand-alone photo and one with an article. The former should be interesting enough that the general readership want to see them.

Hopefully between my response and Cheryl's you have the answer to your question...
