Thanks I always like to see more of them. Yes I have seen the ones from Lech. Actually that CD is what got me started with cave photography. On my first Lech trip we saw them in the book store. I got some tips from Stan Allison who actually took the photos. The software is fairly expensive. The others from Dave look good but you can't look up or down.

Probably a little late to join the discussion, but I just started doing 360 spherical panos in caves earlier this year. This grew out of a potential for doing a LIDAR and photo overlay for portions of the Chandelier Ball Room in Lech for replication in the new National Cave and Karst Research Institute in Carlsbad, NM. Still in the planning stages at this moment. Anyway, I've taken some of them at a commercial cave in southern Pennsylvania earlier this year and will be shooting a series of them in Cave Without a Name in Texas next spring. I just gave a presentation at Convention in Vermont last week about it.

I use a Manfrotto 303SPH head and PTgui software to stitch it all together. It works incredibly well and I am VERY happy with the results. Still working on logistics and different types of lighting for it: flash, in-cave or light painting. Each have their advantages and dis-. If you want to see one of the pano movies I did, drop me a line at pjcaver@gwi.net and I'll e-mail it directly to you. Too big to post on this blog....

Just curious since you mentioned doing 360 photos have you tried the new Microsoft Photosynth? It looks pretty interesting, it does 360's and even 3d walkthroughs.

Thanks for mentioning Photosynth David! It's awesome! I tried the free software out in my backyard and the results were amazing, considering I was just using a regular old camera. I can't wait to take this into a cave to see what the result is.

Some old threads on Photosynth:

No problem. I wasn't sure how well it works since I haven't used it but I was looking at it recently and it looked pretty interesting. I plan to try it out as soon as I get fully settled in here in Florida since right now I can get it free through my current school.
