Can the GoPro Hero 9 Good Shoot Good Video Underground?

Postby tluttrell » Dec 13, 2020 2:43 pm

After many years caving I am now ready to learn to video my trips. Since the GoPro Hero 9 has just come out has anyone tried it underground? Is it any good or are there others significantly better? I prefer not having to lug along extra lighting so the lighting that will be present is that on my helmet, a 1100 lumens Zebra floody and a 400 lumens Petzl.

I have no experience of the GoPro Hero 9, but I do have a GoPro 6 Black Edition and an 1100 lumen flood would work perfectly with it for anything relatively close up. I'm impressed with the video quality from the 6 and things can only have got better with the 9. The only issue as far as I am concerned with GoPros is the sound quality. The only issue I have with GoPro videos is when everything is taken from a head mount.

Do you also use a selfie stick and chest mount for your videos?

I have both but use them sparingly.
The selfie-stick is good for lifting the camera up high and for filming over a ledge/down a pitch. I have even been know to use it for its intended purpose from time to time.
I was hoping to use the chesty for fixed shoots, using myself as a tripod but it didn't' work very well as even when I breathe shallowly it moves the camera quite a bit. I have used it on traverses and in crawls quite effectively.
One of the secrets of good video is to vary camera positions and angles. If a video is shot using only a head-mount or a selfie-stick or a chesty it becomes very monotonous and will not hold the interest of viewers.
