I thought I’d post a link to some great photos of Blue Springs Cave in Tennessee:

Sean Roberts took these photos last weekend during our grotto’s spring TAG trip. I wasn’t on the main photo part of the trip, and I’m not a photographer, so I can’t answer any technical questions about the photos (though I know he used multiple LED lights instead of flashes.) I just thought I’d share the pics with you since I think they are top notch.

If those are lit with only LEDs consider me very impressed! Those are some very large spaces. Very nice pictures, and those must be some very still models! :kewl:

Do you think Sean could be convinced to post here on CaveChat about his process?

I was mistaken, a few of the photos were indeed shot with flashes.

Over half of the photos were shot with LEDs only. Probably could have shot the big rooms with LEDs too, but I didn't bother because I can shoot them with flashes much faster and get the same result since they are pretty wide open spaces.

Photos 1, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 were shot with LEDs.
Photos 2, 3, 4, 6 were shot with standard camera flashes.

Sean, that's awesome. They look great!

Do you "light paint" with the leds? Are you using readily available flashlights/headlamps or do you have a custom setup? Are the leds as neutral as they seem or do you have to do a lot of color correcting to remove blueish hues?

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions.

Photo 1 was taken by painting with commercially available LED cave diving lights. For photos 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 all LED's were completely stationary and no painting was done. These were also done with commercially available lights, but not the dive lights. As for color correction, I shoot somewhere between 7500K and 9000K depending on how fresh or dead the batteries in the LED lights are, as they have a tendency to color shift as they run down. No large color correction is needed as long as you shoot at the right color temperature. Any tweaks can be done in seconds when you get home if you shoot in RAW :big grin:
