Space bat trivia:

A bat clung to the external tank on the launch of STS-72 (Endeavor mission) in 1996.(http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/09 ... waway.html)

Koichi Wakata of Japan was aboard both this current flight and that one, making him the first astronaut known to have shared two launches with bats. :bananabat: :patriotic:

The bat on STS-72 escaped before launch.

"On STS-72 there was a bat, but it flew away during launch," Curie said, referring to the 1996 flight of the shuttle Endeavour. That bat did not harm the shuttle at all.

But still, you'd think they'd have more precautions against those tile-foam-and-liquid-hydrogen-eating bats.
