Bat Shadowbox for sale

Postby DementedCaver » Dec 5, 2008 12:29 pm

The Sportsman's Guide is selling mounted bats.
I'm only passing this along, don't shoot the messenger.

Looks like the tropical fruit bat Merlin used to bring to conventions.

How sad. I hope they are using already dead ones instead of killing them.

But I'm sure they are not scouring cave floors for dead bats. . . .

What a truly grisly gift. . . .

I did think "Compare at $120" was funny. I'll have to go around to my local stores and see what the going price is for dessicated bat corpses. . . . . (insert sad bad smiley here)

Love the wording... "Dramatic..." but I guess for the ignorant it is pretty dramatic... probably use it for some halloween party next year... or part of a macabre decorating scheme ala the Addams Family... Either way, yes, it looks like a fruit bat and the teeth...err excuse moi... FANGS look pretty fake to help dramatize the animal. Either that or the actual teeth have been given the dental whitening treatment.
Pretty sad overall considering.

Pretty sad.

Bat World Sanctuary has been busy trying to stop the sale of items like this. That shadowbox looks like one sold by other companies and the bat has been identified as Cynopterus brachyotis that are "Legally Harvested", meaning they are taken from the wild. This bat is also known as the Short-nosed fruit bat. It is an important pollinator and seed dispenser, and has a status of vulnerable.

For more information about the sale of these items, and information about how you can help, please check out Bat World's Wall of Shame: http://www.batworld.org/wall_of_shame/w ... shame.html
