.....For Leslie Sturges, every day is a bat day. She rehabilitates and releases injured and orphaned wild bats at Bat World NOVA rescue center in Annandale, Va., and presents educational programs with a dozen long-term resident bats who can't be returned to the wild.

What fascinates Sturges about bats is how they pack so much into such a tiny package.

According to the article:

"Bats pollinate the agave plant that tequila is made from..."

That might be true but agaves are not raised from seed. They are propagated from small plants called "mecuates" that sprout from the roots. Agave seeds almost never germinate and generally the plants from seed are poor.

Also the plants that are being raised for tequila, mezcal, raicilla and pulque are harvested before they flower.

My wife likes margaritas. I'll be sure to let her know she needs to appreciate bats a little bit more! :big grin:
