Singapore's Night Safari?

Postby Sean Ryan » Jan 24, 2008 9:35 pm

Has anyone been to Singapore's Night Safari before? I was just there a week or two ago. It's the only zoo in the world only open at night. Most of the animals are strategically centered under dim half-lights, bright enough for people to view them but not bright enough for the animals to be disturbed. The food gets placed under the lights, so we had very nice views of lions, tigers, rhinos, leopards and elephants.

And then there's the bats. Giant Malaysian flying foxes are in a big cage, munching on oranges and bananas placed under lights. You have to go in the cage - through a jungle airlock: locking steel door, a plastic chain curtain, and another locking steel door - to get in there. There's no glass or space between you and some of the biggest bats in the world. Anyone inside could just pick one up. There's signs saying the bats won't disturb you unless you disturb them. I doubt a zoo like this could work in America.

I believe the Belize zoo is also open at night.

You just have to sign up ahead of time.
