Fishing for Bats

Postby Vader » May 2, 2007 6:11 pm

While at fixing stuff today a co-worker told me a story about how he used to go fishing for bats. He said you just pick a good light poll and then cast your fishing rod up into the air, alot like a fly fisherman would. he said it wasn't difficult at all to end up with a bat on the end or your line. If the bat swallows the hook I guess you could fly him around like a kite until he gets tired and falls to the ground. This sounds like an urban legend to me. Anybody ever heard of this before?

It seems like the bat would be much more likely to bump into the line as it would to swallow the hook.

I regret I didn't ask him what they used for bait.

Intentionally fishing for bats??? Very poor judgement... Fortunately it's not you who's doing this. Anyway, yes it does happen when fly fishing. It's one of my other passions in life, and while I've never caught one, my grandfather and my sister both have. They cut the line on each occasion.

Well if people are going to eat bats, they do have to catch them first.

Then there are the Hazards of Eating Bats to consider...

That is just terible. I wouldnt think there would be any point to catching bats, other than just to be cruel.

Wait a minute. Aren't you the guy that just said...
I am still going to have to go with the big fly swatter solution...Maybe even get one of those that has some current running through it.

...in another bat-related thread? :tonguecheek:
