Assistant Director – Subterranean Program

Primary Purpose: Bat Conservation International (BCI) seeks an experienced and self-motivated Assistant Subterranean Program Director who has the background and training assist the program director to implement conservation actions for cave and mine roosting bats in the United States and Canada. BCI has a current budget of $4.5M, approximately 9000 members internationally and 35 full time staff that grows to 50 or more based on projects underway. The Assistant Subterranean Program Director will supervise temporary field staff and lead field projects. This position reports to the Director of Subterranean Programs and is based in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The ideal candidate should have a proven record of functioning safely, efficiently, and professionally in a variety of environments throughout North America. The successful candidate will lead a team of trained surveyors to perform internal and external surveys of abandoned mines and caves in cooperation with the organization’s many partners.

Essential Functions:
· Lead teams to survey for bats in caves and mines across the US, with current emphasis on the American Southwest.
· Assist director with managing all aspects of field projects in the US but will be responsible for the field logistics associated with project work.
· Assist director with report writing, data management, presentations, and identifying funding sources.
· Work effectively with the field teams, partners, and rest of the organization to successfully implement complex projects.
· Balance a workload with shifting priorities and time restrictions for accomplishing conservation work.
· Document work through field photography.
· Perform field vehicle care and maintenance and field equipment care and maintenance.
· Present information through oral presentations and other media
· Provide general administrative support of the Subterranean Program.


Qualifications/Requirements:
· A Bachelor’s of Science in Biology, Fish and Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or other similar natural resource degrees and 2-3 years experience OR a Master’s of Science in Biology, Fish and Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or other similar natural resource degrees.
· An extensive knowledge of North American bat biology and ecology
· An extensive knowledge and ability to train and supervise others in advanced rappelling techniques, technical rock climbing (traditional and sport).
· Training and/or experience in self-rescue, surface and underground abandoned mine hazards, hardrock mining history and methods, advanced first aid, and CPR.
· Extensive experience and knowledge in 4x4 off-road driving is required (including ATV use), many project areas are remote and have extremely rough access.
· Hiking, backpacking, and camping skills due to occasional backcountry work.
· A background in leading field crews or other teams is desirable.
· Strong oral presentation skills and strong written skills.
