Bat "Horror Story" in Evansville, IN newspaper. Wow...

I don't even know where to begin other than I could understand if this was a small town weekly newspaper, however this is a newspaper that serves a population of 250,000-3000,000 people...... Could have been a great chance to educate the general public, instead of making a whimsical fluff piece and generally breeding ignorance. No mention of any bats being endangered or WNS.

Because the Wathens always have a video camera on hand, they taped a portion of the sometimes slapstick action that saw Lynda swinging a broom at one of the bats and Richard trying to capture one with a blanket and a dustpan that has a long handle.

During one especially scary moment, (the scream that awakened Richard), a bat headed straight toward Lynda and she dropped to one knee "landing hard," and hit her head on the doorframe between the dining room and entry hall. The knee soon began to swell and caused her more than a little misery.

That's karma for you.

Paranoid ignorant rednecks people.

[Edited to strikeout the incorrect use of an improper noun.]

I never said you were. Hopefully you and most other intelligent, informed individuals don't freak out and attack bats.

Sorry, but you did use the often described derogatory term "redneck" in your description of these people. And by the way, this reaction is probably typical of people who have bats or other wild critters wonder into their home.

Apologies for offending you with the redneck comment. I have now consulted dictionary.com and found that my use of the word may have been misdirected. Consider it retracted.

red·neck [red-nek] Often Disparaging
–noun
1. an uneducated white farm laborer, esp. from the South.
2. a bigot or reactionary, esp. from the rural working class.

–adjective
3. Also, red-necked . narrow, prejudiced, or reactionary: a redneck attitude.

And by the way, this reaction is probably typical of people who have bats or other wild critters wonder into their home.

I would hope most people would be able to differentiate between wild animals which tend to attack humans, and those which generally don't. But then again it seems the general public has many misconceptions when it comes to bats. Point taken.

That article could have been edited down to a paragraph or two, easily. Also, this shouldn't even be news and it's a "featured" video on the main page.

Over the next day or so a total of 12 bats was collected...

Some proof reading they have there too.

Does anyone know if this is a well respected/circulated newspaper? If so, that's just sad.
