I'm experimenting around with a replacement for the old photo rotation system I had going at the bottom left of the main forum page.
Under the old system, people had to e-mail me photos, I had to shrink them down and add them to the rotation, replacing earlier versions We were limited to about 60. There was no way to click on them to get the larger photo.
I'm trying out a Flickr slideshow application that pulls tagged photos that are tagged "cavechat" (no quotes). This application comes in an iframe so I'm hoping it will get around the issue some people have with flash widgets.
This widget is fully searchable and clickable. You can click on the thumbnail photo to get more information about it and get a link to the larger photo on Flickr. Rather than pulling a tag like caving, I've made it so it only shows photos tagged with cavechat. By tagging your Flickr photos with cavechat you are giving permission for them to be used on this forum. Please tag any photos you want to share.
If you weren't aware, Flickr photos marked public can be used by third-party applications and if you don't want your photos used in that way, you can go into our profile and look under permissions and click the box that says you don't want thumbnails of your photos shown by third-party applications.
If you are a Flickr member and haven't yet joined the NSS Caving photo-sharing group, stop by
http://www.flickr.com/groups/caving_photos/ and join us. I've made the widget so you don't have to be a member of the photo group to share photos for the widget on our site. It's only searching by a one keyword, and that is cavechat.
Please let me know if this widget creates any problems for you. There are a bunch of them out there and this is just the one I like so far. Let me know if you find a better one.
Flickr is a good example of Web 2.0 technology, where people share information, photos etc.
