Your post doesn't seem to have a direct connection with caving trips and expeditions, so I moved it here into caver introductions. There are many active cavers in NY state, and some are regulars here on the forum. Hopefully they can steer you in the right direction and share some local knowledge.

Find a grotto near you http://www.nssio.org/find_grotto_overview.cfm?state=NY, and attend the meetings to meet and talk to cavers. And if you're serious about caves and caving, join!
