New DRY caver

Postby caverphill » Nov 11, 2006 4:17 pm

Hi, I started cave diving here in central Florida, when I was 16. I stayed heavily into it, until about 23 yrs. old or so. I had the privilege of taking part in the survey of some caves, and documenting some by video........ Then I met a girl, you know one of those life changing girls, and sold my gear and dreams, for a ring and a business. I don't regret this at all, but, I still find myself drawn to caves. Now, an old friend and I have been exploring the few caves around here, that we know of, and have been talking about buying some real gear and making some trips somewhere to start down the path of exploring some decent caves, (no offense to Florida caves, but, you know.......) So, long story short, we are interested in making a couple of trips a year somewhere to do some learning, but don't know where to start. I have been to a local grotto meeting, but was not impressed with the enthusiasm level very much. Any direction would be much appreciated, thanks! - Phill

welcome aboard! Still, the best way to get some caving in is with a grotto club of course... I'd say keep at it and give them another chance. Good luck!

Phill,

I assume the grotto that you met up with was the central florida cavers, but have you tried to contact the Tampa Bay Area grotto? They are a good bunch of folks and stay active. You don't have to live in a particular area to belong to a certain grotto. Also in the spring is the Florida Cave Cavort, hosted by the central florida cavers up at Ginnie Springs. That will give you a chance to meet a lot of other florida cavers.
