Howdy from NY

Postby Jpiecuch » Oct 19, 2012 8:59 pm

Hi Folks

Recent transplant from OR/WA/AK to New York State, over near the MA/CT/NY border. Always been a hiker/scrambler/climber, and have often made time for caving, but am approaching it now with a new found zeal (or obsessive compulsive dis-order!) now that I have some terrain that is a little more conducive! I've been busy the last few months since moving here, exploring the caves of this tri state area, and am preparing to lay the act of active caving on ice until May (nods to the bat, here is hoping for two. . .).

So, joined up here, hitting the books and speleo-porn, studying up, reading, etc. I just finished an absolutely god awful book - "Blind Descent: the quest to find the deepest cave and blah blah". Horrid! Caving doesn't need such tawdry dime store BS to make it exciting.. Interesting subject material but terrible writing. This was preceded however by "Deep Secrets" and "The Longest Cave", both of which I enjoyed greatly. Anyways, reading and familiarizing myself with SRT are on the agenda for the winter.

Recently did the OCR class held in Canaan, NY, which was a great experience. Immensely valuable knowledge and practice! Whether or not I am ever involved in the rescue side of caving it has certainly made me a safer caver. Also a great opportunity to meet some of the local yokels, newbies, and seasoned vets in the NE caving community. Good time all around.

joined a (semi) local grotto (CCG) and they have been most accommodating to withstanding and even answering my barrages of questions. .. . Thanks dudes!

In addition to caving I enjoy hiking, cuisine (both preparation and consumption ;)) , mycology, astronomy, playing music, biochemistry, making art, dispelling misinformation, etc etc, and currently count myself as a proud young farmer, working with vegetables, sheep, and cows. Look forward to getting to know you all more.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum! :waving:

I know the feeling about being a transplant - I've lived in all the states you listed (and more), except for NY. And we're even in the same grotto, although I don't get to meetings or northeast region OCRs much these days. Happy caving!

Obsessive compulsive about caving, sounds like you're exactly the kind of fool who will actually enjoy northeast caving. If you're looking for more trips to do, check out SUOC, I'm the current caving chair in our grotto and I've been a bit slow this fall but I get a few trips a month out and you would be welcome to join us.

Welcome, and hope to run into you some time soon at a caving event or whatnot. You have some great folks to help guide you in CCG.

Ok, now I need a face to put to the name (as I was one of the instructors at the OCR in Canaan, NY)

Remember too to check out the weeklong class this coming summer.

Also check out the RPI Outing Club Grotto (though they (we? depends on how busy I am)) are pretty much done for the year.

Hey Greg, didn't see your post. I was the bearded gentleman, dragging you around in the sled on day one confusing left and right. Well, gentleman may be a stretch, but bearded is apt. And homemade tattoos in all the wrong places ;) ( hands, fingers, wtf?!).

But anyway, thanks for the class, it was great. Considering doing the weeklong this summer, the intro was so helpful and informative. Anyways, have been busy in the "off season" doing lots of reading, studying. .. Went up to schoharie to pay a visit to Emily and pretty much emptied her back stock of NE cavers and my bank account on books, and didn't even allow myself to look at all the old and rare stuff or the speleodigests, I would have bankrupted myself! I'm a sucker for the old stuff...Clay Perry was my first and only guide when I first moved out here, and even FINDING the caves with such scant info was almost as exciting as the caves themselves. So, I've got a lot more info now, but sometimes it's just more fun to use a NE caver from the 70's as your resource rather than then the speleowiki, amazing resource that it is. Have kept in touch with several of the cavers from the class, and I think my only proper trip, due to the bats, was Onesquethaw with a few of these guys, right after a proper rain storm. The river was really going, madeit exciting, and the glorious seemingly endless chimneying path above it was made all the more exciting for it! We thought we went through most of the cave, but open returning home and studying and looking at the maps more I think we only made it about half way through! Time to go back I guess. I see bentleys is also open, which I overlooked, so maybe another trip can be gotten in this winter.

Have missed the last few CCG grotto meetings as it is a 2 hr drive when held at one location, which I can muster, but further east is tough after a long days work. Planning on the March meeting though, regardless. I missed a last minute Bentleys trip with em, gotta check my email more!!

Explored several of the concrete mines in the in the rosendale and Kingston area, several mknths ago, pretty amazing. Anybody know if these been properly mapped? If so I'd love to see one. . Pretty confusing stuff, for being man made.

Anyhow, just stopping by and saying hello to all. Cheers.

Hmm, I and I apparently missed your reply. Glad you enjoyed the class.

As always I had a blast.

And definitely come for the weeklong. Sign up now before prices go up!
