DUSI version 2

Postby LWB » Jun 4, 2009 8:58 pm

My DUSI version 2 arrived today. Sean has added a bunch of new stuff, but best of all is the "Advanced Survey" mode. It also now has a beep when it takes a reading which I really like. There is still the 1 second delay to steady the DUSI when taking a reading. And it can take many more calibration points than the version 1 - and it beeps with each new still point - it makes calibration easier.

The Advanced Survey mode allow you to collect all the survey data in the DUSI if you would like to. You can put distance and walls information

The line plot display and the visualization of the calibration points is pretty neat too. I will get some photos of some of the displays and post them. Sean has lots of "About" screens with documentation.

It will be a week and a half before I get to do any "real" testing, but my backyard calibration attempt produced a good calibration (based on the numbers). I'd like to use the tripod for the laser alignment step - that should produce the best results. I'm in the middle of yet another tripod mode to improve testing accuracy.

If the DUSI version 2 testing turns out as well the beta version of the new algorithm, I will be very pleased.

Worried about mud & water? Like the Disto X, using a DryPak works for the DUSI too. If you remove the DUSI from the plastic boot it will fit in the small camera DryPak. If you want the protection of the plastic boot you can use the large camera DryPak. See Photos.

Small Camera DryPak (I like the clasp on the side, it does not get in the way)

Sean is in Colorado, but he has been traveling this summer. He does get to email occasionally, but if your order was successfully paid for via PalPay it should have been mailed. I checked his website and found no evidence of unsent orders. Do you have an order number? Do you have his email address?

OK, I managed to find the website: http://digitalsurveyinstruments.com/

It doesn't say if it has a clinometer. If so, it seems to be a pretty good deal for only $250.
Any opinions are personal.

Yeah, the DUSI has both azimuth and elevation readings. Uses the same accelerometers as the Disto X, and the same magnetic sensors (Honeywell) as the Pony. The Disto X uses the other magnetometers (PNI, I think).

It does not do distance, but in the Advanced Survey mode you can enter Distance (and LRUD) if desired (you can turn these off and on in the options menu). And the Foresight / Backsight compare gives the error between FS & BS for both Az and El. The acceptable tolerance (user entered) is the same for FS and BS. If the values exceed the tolerance (e.g. 1 degree) the display blinks - you can still accept the value, or repeat either FS or BS. For those of use who have trouble with adding or subtracting 180 degrees in muddy conditions, it is a very nice feature...

I would really like to buy this thing right now but there are two major things stopping me from doing so.

First of all, there is no contact information on the website. Who can I send questions to?

Second of all, there is this in the FAQ
# What does it mean if there is an X carved in the back of my pointer device?
The accelerometer is difficult to solder, therefore there are some units which the accelerometer was destroyed in assembly. If your device is marked with an X, then the device only has working magnetic sensors, and cannot do tilt-compensation.

Sounds risky to me. I don't want to end up paying full price for something that has a broken feature.

I also have a few other questions, but they don't really matter unless these first two issues can be addressed first. Does anybody have an email address for the guy who is selling this thing?
This signature is really funny

The item you posted in the FAQ is related to the "Pointer Device" which I am guessing is the "Magnetometer Mouse" also for sale on the website, not the DUSI itself.

Yes, this is in reference to the mouse pointer / 3-D joystick device, NOT the DUSI

Sean might kill me for this, but his contact info is gecko senator without the space and he uses gmail

Hi,

Good luck with contacting Sean D'Epagnier. His website (http://digitalsurveyinstruments.com/) is gone, his GMail address bounces and an online reseller (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8939) says "This product was retired because of supplier discontinuation." :(

Luc,

Sean changed his email address in October. I did send his new one to the guy with the broken screen. He might have some spare screens.

Sean has been out of DUSI v2 for some time and I believe he is out of v1 now as well. That is probably why the website is down. He was working on some new idea the last I heard from him. He was still living on his boat - which was a very bad place to work on anything dealing with magnetometers.

He might be out of caving too as I didn't find him in the NSS members' manual I received yesterday
