Cave Models

Postby Oddball » May 5, 2009 2:03 pm

On my quest to find the end of the internet I found out about this 3d printing process. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3gHHeD6cv8&feature=related I think with a very good survey of a complex cave you could produce a very neat 3d model of the cave that you could put on a mantle or bookshelf. It would no doubt be a coversation peice and you could always know that your favorite cave is right in your living room!

I know this clip shows a very expensive technique but i have seen cheaper more primitive versions. Let me know if you think this would be as cool as i think it would be!

I'm sure those prototyping machines will appear shortly in all the Walgreen's and Walmart stores. They'll be right next to the TV Tube Testers.

I know a guy who uses a similar 3D "printing" device at work. He's made some neat models for himself. I'm not sure about modeling a cave passage in 3D, but we've been discussing making some caving related devices like battery adapters.

These printers have been around for several years. If you cut a "slice" horizontally through the model, you can "lift the hood" on your cave model and look inside the cave....
