New Version of Compass!

Postby HKalnitz » Jul 23, 2008 6:08 am

Not to steal Larrys' Thunder, but he posted this on Compass Yahoo group a few days ago:

Hi Everybody,

I wanted to let everyone know that I have just released a new version
of Compass with a special new feature. The latest version will allow
you to export your cave data as KML files. KML files are used by
Google Earth to display all kinds of geographic information. In this
case, Compass exports the passage information in the KML file. When
Google Earth reads the file, it overlays the terrain around the cave
with passage outlines. This allows you to see the cave in relation to
terrain features.

The KML files can be posted on the internet for other people to look
at.

I didn't think Larry's description was entirely clear. What you get are cave wall outlines projected up to the terrain surface above. It's not a 3D model of the cave. It could have been done that way, what with KML being three dimensional, but Google Earth doesn't provide a way to see underground. For all that, the feature is still a hoot and provides an easy way to show a cave's plan view in its home terrain.
