Another laser rangefinder inquiry

Postby cavernap » Feb 29, 2008 8:11 am

I have used a Disto for LRUD for survey, and find it very useful. I want to get a laser rangefinder, but don't like the price tag of a Disto. Also, I don't need accuracy to the cm--within a meter would be fine. And I'd also like a range of 300m+ (I want to be able to use this for pit depth). The only models I've found are for hunters/golfers, but they are sight range finders (you have to be able to see the target). That wouldn't work for a pit bottom. Any suggestions?

I'm not aware of any handheld units that will do 300 meters. I find that when distances get around 100 feet aiming gets difficult. If you plan on doing 300 meters you'll probably also need a target plate and viewfinder of some sort. It will be pricey.

There are many laser measurement gizmos out there that will do what you ask for. Take a look at some of the products design for the forestry professionals. We recently used this instrument on a cave survey and reliably shot distances over 150m. The specs say that it will measure over a km.

These units can be found on ebay regularly.
