Leica has just introduced their latest handheld laser distance meter, the Disto™ D3. This may well be the next laser meter for cavers as it has the same functions as the Disto A3 plus a built-in inclinometer. The quick specs are: measuring range of 2 in. – 328 ft. with an accuracy of ± 1/16th in. (1 mm); inclinometer measuring ± 45°; light sensor to automatically switch on the display and keypad illumination in low light environments. No accuracy is stated yet on the inclinometer but the Disto A8 is ± 0.15° so expect the Disto D3 to be very accurate as well. The size of the D3 is actually a little smaller than the A3, just a bit larger than a candy bar style cell phone. We’ll have to wait and see what the full specs are once released by Leica (shipping hopefully begins in November ‘07) but this device looks very promising. The price has not been announced yet but we are hoping it will come in under $400 USD. http://www.LaserStreet.com will carry this device when it is released and as always they are caver friendly.

cavescom wrote:...inclinometer measuring ± 45°...

Does that mean that it will only measure inclination up to a +45 degree shot? I won't take 60 degree or 51 degree reading?

Yep you will have to still have a Suunto Inclinometer around the neck for any >45 degree shots.
