Very cool tool! I called my local tool guy and he said the DLE is the UK version of the dlr165k. Bosch site info. For sale at Amazon, $179.

Did you get one yet? I'd like to see how it holds up in a cave.

Amazon doesn't have them yet but you can get in line and order so when they stock you will get it first.

We (Sc Avalon) are using the DLE50 for almost a year. We combined the dle50 with a clino meter and that is really easy.

Currently the small laser is removed from the clino and the dle50 is mounted aligned to the clino. So this combines clino and disto in one setup.

We've been using it on the Aniallara-Expitions (PSM) in august and october as well in a small new discovery in Belgium and measured several hunderds of meters with it.

Look at the following photo of a clubmember using the combined dle50 with the disto. It's not very clear but he is holding the setup in one hand and the dile50 is mounted on top. He is just ready to switch on the laser

If you can combine the dle50 with a the shetland pony then you have
the clino/disto/compass together in one easy to handle setup.

If you mount everything on a small tripod you can even prevent the
whobby effect of the laser. This will of course only be usefull for smaller caves where you can put the tripod in the clay or sand.

What model Pelican case "best" fits the Bosch DLR165?

Edit: Answering my own question, it looks like the Pelican 1010 Micro Case should fit it like a glove, and the Otter Box 8000 should also fit - can anyone confirm this?

Got one here. Nice touch is that it fits in the same size waterproof box as a set of suuntos.

Just bought a Bosch DLR165K at http://www.cpooutlets.com for $159.95

They're all trending downward in size; the Hilti PD4 (which I just purchased) is slightly longer than the Bosch unit, but narrower and thinner. Anyone know if Bosch makes any claims as to the waterproof or dustproof properties of this unit? Some of the other manufacturers are beginning to put IPX ratings on their laser rangefinders. The PD4 is either IPX5 or IPX7 depending on what you read.

According to the owner's manual, the Bosch DLR165 is rated IP 54 (dust and splashwater protected), excluding the battery compartment.

Yikes, the going buy-it-now price on eBay for a new DLR165K is around $100! I just purchased one new (out of box) for $85 shipped. As with any eBay purchase, caveat emptor!

I've had the Bosch "disto" for about 6 months now. Nice. I've loaned it to a few people who have now ordered their own. If you let the bookkeeper use it you will not get it back! For an all electronic survey you want two laser rangefinders - the one the bookkeeper will not give up and one to measure distance between stations.

I bought mine off ebay without a case or instructions. No problems. I prefer the Bosch to the Leica Distos I've used (I needed instructions for the Leicas)

I see Amazon has them for $126.

The Pelican 1010 is a near perfect fit. That is what I have been using.
I don't have an Otterbox that fits the Bosch, but they might make one.

If you want the inclinometer function with a laser rangefinder, the new Leica Disto with the inclinometer built in would be easier to use in a cave. And less weight/bulk. Personally, I think combining compass and inclinometer is good (like the Shetland Attack Pony), but I would not combine all three. And using reflective targets makes the Pony so easy to aim even over long distances. I find the Pony much easier to use than a laser range finder (even the simple ones like the Bosch). If you combined all 3 functions (distance, inclinometer, and bearing) you would not be able to use reflective targets(can't use reflective targets with a disto). If you have the Pony, there is no need for the fancy Leica Disto with inclinometer. The Pony and a small laser range finder like the Bosch is a great setup.

The laser range finders are great for the bookkeeper. How far under the ledge is the wall? How far up does that ceiling channel go? How far from the station is that big rock so I can put in in the right spot on the sketch? The laser range finders are no easier than a tape for measuring distance between stations.
