Indiana also uses a similar system, where each cave has a cave index number but entrances are entered as individual records linked to the cave index number. having each entrance as a individual database record has been very useful in GIS applications and they can still be related to the cave by means of the cave index number.

I also updated the WY and KY numbers in the totals post on page 5

I have updated the map with the most recently reported numbers. Surely someone out there has some numbers for the western states.

Corrections also welcome.

Nice map!

NC has 1300 caves? I may be moving there this year. What part of the state are they in?

Ah, but only a couple of dozen are what most would consider "caves". Lots of talus and fissure caves in the west. Short, crawly holes in the SE. A few pockets of limestone in the west also. The good caves are real good tho.

I asked the USGS for the source information used in their teachers "scatter map" in my earlier post. They "didn't think that would be of value" but did point me to a excellent 1999 article which I am trying to follow up on, and to "an interesting discussion" here on cavechat!

I guess the govt really does watch everything!...of course they probably did a google search.

WV's seems a little high.

Are you sure we don't have 4379.

From what I have heard:

AZ- Has "No Caves" and the last time anyone saw one it was heading south
CO- Can't decide on what a cave "IS", so thus they don't exist.
NM- Is completely in the dark but there are rumors of "Deep Secrets"
MT- Are "deep" into decision but it is all in chineese
UT- Caves are apart of theocracy thus forbidden to be discussed outside the temple, like Pepsi
ID- Aka Spudnation is no longer apart of the nation because all the "I's" have it.

Well,
:thanks:
Thanks to the generous help of the NSS Cave Files here are the numbers they have by State. The 2nd number after the / is the "cavechat" number we had. The Cave Files custodian cautioned that the NSS numbers are based on literature or documented references in the NSS archives and the cooperation of the State Surveys some of which often do NOT freely share data with the NSS. Since the NSS only keeps location data by county this seems somewhat absurd to me. Obvious differences between the NSS numbers and our informal survey are apparent. As are the similarities for some states. I would urge everyone who is knowledgeable about the cave data in their state to consider contacting the NSS Cave Files custodian, Dick Blenz at rblenz@indiana.edu with data on reported caves in their state....at least to the county level.

Sorry Wendy, guess NC only has 109 caves :tonguecheek:
