3D Imaging?

Is there technology out there yet to map a cave in 3D using a spinning laser DistoX and camera for color image?

I'm not aware of anyone using a Disto for this sort of thing, but caves have certainly been scanned with Lidar to form a 3D model and I have seen the resulting models textured with imagery to complete the visual effect. I'm not sure if anyone has used actual images from the cave to do this yet. It would take incredibly even lighting to do it well.

Sounds exactly like Faro Focus 3D: http://www.faro.com/en-us/products/3d-s ... d/overview

We've used them in a cave before. Lots of fun. http://www.kentuckykarstconservancy.com/big-bat-lidar

Hopefully on our next trip we can use the color camera feature with a couple of zebralights. So far we've just used the laser.

Unfortunately, they cost over $40k last time I looked. Would love to be able to raise enough money for one. Instead our President just gets a local corporation to donate some time.

As for the DistoX, we've looked into it. The issue is that they can only take 10 shots per second (depending on brand of laser disto). The Faro takes over 100,000 shots per minute.

Don't lose hope. There are some other options depending on how accurate you need to be. LIDAR (like the Faro) are EXTREMELY accurate. We are talking forensics level accurate. These are coming down in price rapidly (although maybe not as rapidly as we would like). We might not be many years away from them being affordable.

Also, If you don't need that accurate there are some other devices like the Google Project Tango (aka ATAP) which can do 3D modeling. We are talking accurate enough for a meaningful model, but not picture quality. It's all about what resolution is good enough for your project.

So don't give up hope!

Check-out Leap3D : http://leap3d.eu/

Following blog report (sorry in dutch) shows a test of this tech in a cave.
