Has anyone used Corel Draw for cave mapping - particularly the most recent version (X7).

I'm looking for alternatives to Illustrator and their shameful pricing scheme.

Yes, I've used CorelDraw for a number of years. It works quite well and doesn't cost a fortune. I believe I have rev 6.

If you truly want to save money try inkscape- You can't beat the price its FREE!

With this and GIMP (free photoshop replacement) it's amazing what you can produce. Learning curve is a little steep at first but there's an amazing number of books on the subject if you don't want to look all the steps online and it get more intuitive with each release. I actually found some things it does better and/or easier then adobe.

Well, I'm graphic designer and working with vector based programs on a daily basis and for cave maping Illustrator is the best solution although I'm using it in combination with CorelDraw because it is better in certain tasks but over all the Illustrator is better because better possibilities when it comes to defining the brushes, styles and symbols which makes the drawing much easier....

I've used both Corel Draw and illustrator. Overall, I think I like Illustrator better due to the custom brushes. Some things that were a pain in Corel are just easier in Illustrator. You can create great maps with both.

I would vouch for Inkscape as well, and its free! If you have used a vector based program before than the learning curve is not that steep especially with the great tutorial online that shows how to make cave maps with compass and inkscape. I have made many, many custom brushes on it as well.
