Does anyone still use a topofil?

I ask because I'm cleaning out my garage, and found a Chainman device. It's in a red plastic box and reads in metres. I used it once running down lava tubes in Hawaii, maybe a couple times solo survey in Roppel Cave.

Anybody have a use for this thing? Is it worth anything, or should I just chuck it? I have a few rolls of thread with it as well.

Cheers, eh?

Greetings Pete!

I have no need for that ball-o-string given all our fancy modern laser technology. Perhaps George Dasher is looking to upgrade to a nice topofil? :big grin:

I'd just like to welcome the Good Doctor to CaveChat, where we hope you'll enlighten and entertain us with your patented Better Way. :beer30:

Folks, PTPP is a longtime Yosemite big wall climber with 50+ ascents under his belt, was one of the McMaster University "Canadians" who explored large parts of West Virginia's current longest cave system Friar's Hole, and these days can frequently be found pushing leads and climbs in Kentucky's Roppel Cave when the weather isn't primo at Yosemite.

Looks like I won't be down for "American Thanksgiving", but best of luck to you this week in Roppel, Pete!

Please, don't toss it, at least not yet!

I am the new NSS Museum Curator, so new that I don't know if we have an example of a topofil for the collection. If I check our curated material and find we don't have one, would you consider donating it?

The new NSS office will have a public display of "artifacts" for visitors to view. I plan on rotating the items on a regular basis (monthly or quarterly, depending on the amount of traffic).

Send me a PM if you are willing to donate.

Thanks

Scott Shaw

This topofil being in metres, it'll look like an artifact from the future in the NSS Museum ;)
