Example of 3D map with elevation model of surface. The 3D model of galleries is generated according walls shapes and passage heights (symbol: passage-height).

SVG -> Inkscape -> Therion

Postby Martin Sluka » Jun 18, 2012 7:06 am

I add the link to the PDF "Cookbook" for conversion of SVG files to Therion format with help of Inkscape (thank to Thomas Holder). It is demonstration for simple caves and mainly to 3D Loch models. Complex caves requires more "cook's" knowledge. :waving:

The reality here is that hand-drafting, or otherwise digitally drafting "by hand" with a stylus and few symbols (which is what Spike, myself and others do) is by all accounts an excruciating and tedious process... yet it still represents the path of least resistance. Cave mapping, unfortunately, is hardly work for the lazy.

Or maybe I AM lazy for choosing to spend hundreds and hundreds of man-hours drafting maps instead of spending hundreds and hundreds of man-hours teaching Therion how to make maps look the way I want them. So far, the only way I've found is to draw, one line at a time. Maybe I'm too particular.

It's six of one, half-dozen of another. And it's a moot point of late, as I certainly haven't had time to work on any of my mapping projects!

edit: PS, Martin, I actually do appreciate that you've been putting the periodic Therion updates in this thread. It even makes them easier to find, now that they're all in one place.

teaching Therion how to make maps look the way I want them.

I spent many hours to find the way to convert SVG files to Therion's format. It wouldn't be possible without help of Thomas Holder's extensions. He did great work to code and debug them. There are few rests as the -rotation option but it is possible to live with them. I was able to reconstruct most of the symbols including the colors the authors used combining symbols from several symbol sets included in Therion yet. Some of them require programing new symbols in MetaPost. In a feature the complete set of CCNP symbols will be available in Therion too, I'm sure.

One may use any PDF, PNG or JPEG file included in final export to PDF or others export format file (see map-image command in Therion book). So there is absolutely free to use the title, description, scale, north arrow, etc. as he/she wants. Or combine several maps - typically plan and extended elevation - in one file.

Color fills is the question of defining and using several user defined areas - only change of the color value there. The same with blocks, or areas filled with point symbols, etc.

So there is a way...

Re: Drawing multiple levels

Postby Martin Sluka » Jul 17, 2012 1:37 pm

Check Therion's wiki for examples. Note: all outputs are generated by Therion according parameters in map definition and parameters of output.
This is base definition of particular map which will be used for generating final map. The layers above (under break or according preview definition) are semitransparent (adjustable).
map <id> [OPTIONS]
... scrap, survey or other map references ...
break
... next level scrap, survey or other map references ...
preview <above/below> <other map id>
endmap

From Therion's book:

if you refer to map, you can specify of set at which this sub-map will be displayed together with preview type of its original position. Syntax is following: <map reference> [<offset X> <offset Y> <units>] <above/below/none>

Definition of layers in output parameters section:

- colo[u]r <item> <colour> . customize colour for special map items (map-fg, mapbg, preview-above, preview-below, label). Colour range is 0{100 for grayscale, [0{100 0{100 0{100] triplet for RGB colours. For map-fg, you can use altitude, scrap or map as colours. In this case the map is coloured according to altitude, scraps or maps.

- layers <on/off> . enable/disable PDF 1.5 layers (M, A; default: on)

- opacity <value> . set opacity value (used if transparency is on). Value range is 0{100. (M, A; default: 70) = opacity of above level

    Altas layers - blue actual layer, grey below, clear above
    Atlas layers - actual layer with details, grey layer below, clear layer above

You may modify or create new of any symbol, part of legend, etc. according to your needs. Check:

Is this answering an unseen question, or just your regular reminder designed to restore the Therion thread at the top of the list? ;)

Second choice naturally, but only if you don't think that section of wiki represents huge amount of work mainly of Bruce and it is quite useful. ;)

Hi Luc!

The symbols in Therion are drawn in program named MetaPost. You may find several links to MetaPost guides and several pages with examples with source codes on wiki page of Therion now. So you may imagine what is possible to do in Therion creating your own symbol sets or mimic a symbol set used in your project. Let's go play and test. :kewl:

Hi, Luc!

Another help program for paperless surveying and transfer data to Therion:

TopParser
Author: Andrew Atkinson
Link: https://bitbucket.org/AndrewA/topparser/overview
TopParser provides an alternative method of converting PocketTopo files to Therion Files.

TopParser takes a PocketTopo *.top binary file and produces a set of Therion text files to represent;

    - the survey centreline
    - a drawing file for each projection you choose complete with;
    - background images
    - empty pre-named scraps for each projection and each cross section present in the *.top file.
The Therion files can be automatically named and inserted into your existing survey dataset.

Re: Therion

Postby Chupakabra » Sep 24, 2013 5:43 pm

Need help. I'm not able to enter "-" to omit backclino measurement:
...
data normal from to tape compass backcompass clino backclino
A0 A1 1 100.0 - 0.0 -
...
I get an "-- invalid backwards gradient reading -- - " message when compile.

It seems like Therion requires backclino to be entered, but from Survex documentation:
"The CLINO/BACKCLINO reading is not required - if it's not given, the vertical standard deviation is taken to be proportional to the tape measurement. Alternatively, individual clino readings can be given as OMIT (default "-") which allows for data where only some clino readings are missing."

Thanks for help!
