Reflection Shot

Postby Scott McCrea » Nov 21, 2011 9:40 am

Had a milestone survey shot this weekend. Got to use the old sight-to-the-reflection technique. The only workable stations were a couple of inches out of sight line, but there just happened to be a pool of water between the stations. We could sight to the reflection in the pool and not need to have direct light on sight. Of course, we could have offset the stations, like we had to do with the clino reading, but where's the fun in that.

hah nice. We always offset the stations if need be, but then again we carry plastic stakes and we just make virtual stations (sort of like making a rock pile) for every station throughout the entire cave, unless some awesome flake, tite/mite is sticking out in the perfect spot (need some permanent stations anyway) so we can usually get perfect line of site anyway. Usually........usually.........

so how long did you have to wait for the ripples in the water to go away so you could make the reflection shot?

That's cool, and probably better than the compass offset.

I read your post and first imagined that you bounced everything - compass, clino, and Disto. You'd need the height above the water of at least one of the stations, but it would work. And it would be a hell of thing.

But was the pool virgin?

Yes, the pool was virgin. Actually, it would be better defined as a puddle. And, we could easily get around without disturbing the water.
