Does anyone still draw up maps entirely by hand?

Postby hewhocaves » Mar 11, 2006 2:40 pm

...besides me?

Although recently I've started to get away from that. I use "On Station" to crunch the numbers and generate a line plot (which is useful to overlay via photoshop onto a jpg of a topo map).

But I still take the X,Y,Zs and a biiig piece of graph paper and plot the points by hand, and fill in the detail the old fashioned way. I find that it lends more of an artistic feel to the map. I've also used a little calligraphy on maps to get a certain mood. I like conveying the impression that this map is old, even if it's just been drawn up. There's something about holding an old map in a cave which is very "Indiana Jones"ish, which IMHO is excellent atmosphere for referring to underground.

I'm a draftsman by trade for over 30 years. I have switched entirely to computer drafted maps. I made the change just because it's less hassle on the computer. I still enjoying drawing by hand but it seems to take more time and I don't have a dedicated drawing board anymore.

I love the look of the old hand drafted maps. I say keep it up if you enjoy it.

Draw yes, letter no

I still draw them up the old fashioned way. Then I scan them and import them into Corel Draw for lettering and final layout. Makes it much easier to get the right balance and correct lettering mistakes.

I still do maps by hand.

But it is a PAIN to make big-time changes to the first copy.

Well pencils are cheaper than illustrator! And carbide smells good too.
