Recovering 'CavePlot' Survey Data

Postby driggs » May 10, 2010 6:23 pm

I've inherited some mid-90's era survey data in CavePlot format; it doesn't have a file extension, but a hexdump shows the string "Survey Data for CavePlot 2.0".

Unfortunately, it appears that the CavePlot homepage has fallen off the Internet [Edit: CavePlot homepage cached on the Internet Archive], email to caverdave@aol.com fails, so I do not have a copy of CavePlot, I don't know anything about it, and I also don't have an old G3 Mac which I believe would be required to run it (though I do have a modern x86-based OS X 10.5 Mac).

I'm looking for suggestions on ways to convert this survey data into a "modern" format, preferably Compass, Walls, or Survex; or worst-case, a way to view and work with the data in its current format. Help!

driggs,

According to the old BCRA software page, David Herron is the contact person for this program. He is listed in the current Members Manual in the Utah section.

I looked up David Herron's current contact info in the NSS Members Manual as suggested (thanks Jim!) and he quickly replied:

David Herron wrote:No, unfortunately, your shiny new Mac won't run CavePlot. However, I would be happy to help out as I can, and I have some older computers that still run CavePlot just fine.

Dwight, I'd completely forgotten about RosettaStal, and will give it a shot later tonight; thanks for the suggestion!
