IOs Deactivated

Postby Keith Wheeland » Mar 4, 2009 9:26 pm

I deeply regret to announce that the following IOs have been deactivated effective March 4, 2009. I will be sending a letter to the grottos tomorrow explaining that they have been deactivated and also explaining how they can be reactivated. They have already been notified by email of the deactivation.

Clayton County Cavers (000285) (GA)
Columbia Grotto (000255) (CA)
Golden Pond Grotto (000353) (KY)
Juniata College Grotto (000288) (PA)
Rock River Speleological Society (000144) (IL)

Paleontology Section (300013) (They asked to be deactivated.)

If anyone has additional information about any of the grottos, please let me know.

Keith,

NSSTrak shows several members still list those grottos as their primary affiliation.

Clayton County Cavers (000285) (GA) 15 members. Larry Blair is one.
Columbia Grotto (000255) (CA) 15 members
Golden Pond Grotto (000353) (KY) 6 members
Juniata College Grotto (000288) (PA) 4 members
Rock River Speleological Society (000144) (IL) 6 members

There are many IOs that are no longer active for which NSS members continue to designate as their Primary Affiliation. Unfortunately those NSS members don't have a vote in COG unless they register as a group of unaffiliated NSS members at a COG meeting. An NSS member is not required to designate a Primary Affiliation. There is a lot more detail about this subject on the IO website at www.caves.org/committee/i-o/

Keith, why did the paleontology section choose to be deactivated?

They probably thought they were too old.

Ray Garton and Fred Grady discussed the situation. The membership is low (a Section must have a minimum of 10 NSS members), Fred and Ray were moving on to other things, and no one else in the Section was willing to do the administrative work of the Section.

Also, last month an announcement was made here on the forum that the Cave Rescue Section would be deactivated. (However the CRS website is still up on caves.org.)

That's because they essentially submitted their IO Annual Report so I assumed everything was OK. Your notice was the first I've heard about it. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll verify and then take the appropriate steps. (As you can see I spend way too much time on IO stuff and not enough time to check the forum.)

I have checked with the Cave Rescue Section treasurer, Gary Moss. He told me that the posting stating that the Section is inactive is premature. The Section will make a decision at the NSS Convention. If you are interested in becoming an active member of the Section, contact Gary Moss.

Hmmm, interesting.

To avoid straying off topic, I posted my reply to this in the Cave Rescue Section, adieu! topic I linked to earlier.

Following up on this earlier discussion, it seems nobody turned up for the scheduled meeting of the Cave Rescue Section at the recent convention/ICS in Texas. More details here.
