The Archives Division of the NSS is in need of a few good cavers for the following volunteer positions:
Archivist – work with the history of the National Speleological Society through documents going back to the 1940's, correspondence to and from Officers, Board members, and various committees, BOG Minutes, Convention information, and much more! Assist researchers and respond to inquires from cavers across the country in need of historical information. Utilize Past Perfect software to organize donations. (Desk, computer, and software included)
Cave Files – the original virtual caving! Be the keeper of “The Files” which include not only basic information, but trip reports and maps on EVERY published cave in the U.S.A.!! Current cave count 57,849. (Desk, computer, and 16 filing cabinets included)
Speleo-Museum Curator – like caving and cave related “Stuff”? We've got vertical gear, helmets, coveralls, Convention T shirts and souvenirs, Grotto patches, gadgets and whats-its galore! A large area in the new HQ will showcase our collections and we need you to display these historical objects in an interesting and informative manner. Contact famous cavers to secure their stories to go along with their donated items. Utilize Past Perfect software to maintain your archival inventory. (Desk, laptop, and software included. Digital camera required)
Applicants for these three positions should be NSS members in good standing, and MUST be able to spend time at least twice a month working with their collection. (Free camp sites available for those traveling to HQ) Collaborative teamworking with other Archivists, and basic computer skills, a plus. Love of caving required.
Selected individuals will be required to help receive their collection when it moves to the NSS Headquarters in Huntsville, Alabama and coordinate the organization of said items into their designated space.
