Cavechat Gmail accounts now available

Postby Wayne Harrison » Dec 20, 2007 3:28 pm

Cavechat has joined with Google Gmail to offer FREE Cavechat Gmail accounts to the first 1,000 subscribers.

Why get a cavechat account if you already have a Gmail account?

You can get your free Gmail account with any name or nick you wish (a great deal if your favorite name@gmail is already taken by someone else).

This means you can get yourname@cavechat.org and access it from any computer by visiting the special Cavechat Gmail page at:

http://mail.cavechat.org

IMPORTANT: To request your free Cavechat.org Gmail account, contact the current Cavechat admin, David Grimes:

Please send the name you want for your Gmail account and David will do the rest. One Cavechat member per name, please.

I've also set up a Google Cavechat start page, with a bunch of different handy apps that you can use with your Gmail account. You can access that page at:

http://start.cavechat.org/

Once you have a Gmail account, you can log in to that page with your username and password to change it around.

Cavechat Gmail, powered by Google.

Hey Wayne, functionality-wise, are these equivalent to a normal gmail account (aside from the cool "cavechat.org" name, that is)?

I already have a G-mail account... does this mean to open up another one or just annex?

It's a separate Gmail account with @cavechat.org instead of @gmail and it comes with all the features of regular Gmail, like mobile access. Regular Gmail is accessed through mail.google.com.... this one is accessed at mail.cavechat.org.

The other difference is you see the NSS Logo and Cavechat instead of the Gmail logo on your mail pages... other than that, it's Gmail.

You can forward cavechat.org emails into your regular Gmail account (or visa versa).

I set my new cavechat.org email address to forward to my regular Gmail account, where I forward all my other email addresses. Fun stuff!

We've had a good initial response but have lots more e-mail accounts available.

Just to repeat: using @cavechat.org address allows you to get that special e-mail name you might not have been able to get through regular Gmail because it was already taken by someone.

We have some who have elected to use just two-letter initials (i.e. jk@cavechat.org) and others who have gotten to drop the added numbers to a gmail name (bill278) and just go with bill@gmail.com.

Caveman and Cavemud are already taken, BTW.

This is the full-featured Gmail account, with all the bells and whistles of regular Gmail... just with @cavechat.org, instead of @gmail.com. The account also allows you to use (and share) the Gmail calendar and docs (great if you can't afford MS Office).

Hey guys! I have to re-log into Cavechat.org every time I change the page and want to post, etc. Also I am unable to access my former NSS e-mail. Did the g-mail system replace the e-mail associated with this site? Have you removed permissions to PM other folks from this site?

I don't know what is going on because I'm not particularly computer saavy but will you please check on the settings for my account. At the moment this seems to be the only way that I can contact you and while I'm lucky enough to access this page (without another login) I figured the best I can do is at least hope you read this post soon! :hairpull:

We've been experiencing some technical difficulties this morning. Things should be back to normal soon, if they aren't already.

If you are having trouble getting logged out, it sounds like a cookie issue. Please click on the "Delete All Board Cookies" on the bottom right of the main page and then re-log in... that way, it will save a new cookie. (This new feature saves users from having to go into their web browser and find the folder the cookies are in and delete them. It's quick and simple now)

As for the email question, are you asking about a caves.org e-mail address or a Cavechat.org email address? The Gmail system is for Cavechat.org and did not replace the Caves.org system which I don't administer.

We have not removed permissions to PM. The button has moved to under the poster's avatar, if you PM from that way. The other way is through your user control panel (top left) I was able to check your permissions and you can send PMs.

As NZ mentioned, we had some server issues late last night and into this morning, but Darrell Wells, the NSS IT Chair, has taken measures to correct them. Things should be back to normal now.
