Trouble logging on?

Postby Wayne Harrison » Oct 13, 2007 8:49 am

We've experienced some sort of cookie problem, resulting in many people not being able to log on (including me).

To fix:

#1 Go to My Computer>(your drive)>Documents and Settings>(your name)>Local Settings>Temporary Internet Files

#2 Delete the caves.org cookie

That file path doesn't work for me. I would need to go My Computer>C drive>Documents and Settings>(your name)>Local Settings>Temp.

It's probably easier to follow the method in your browser help. This is it for IE7:

To delete a single cookie

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
On the General tab, under Browsing history, click Settings.
Click the View files button.
Click the Name column heading to sort all the files alphabetically, and then scroll down until you see files that begin with the prefix Cookie:. All cookies will have that prefix, and they usually contain the name of the website that created the cookie.
Right-click the cookie you want to delete, click Delete, and then click Yes.

I logged out of my internet connection altogether and logged back in and I was alright. Interestignly the list of registered users showed me as being logged in even the forum kept me a "guest".

Well, the folks who make this software sure changed things. I've discovered that using Safari, I have to delete the cookies *every* time I come to Cavechat. Oh, boy, *that's* convenient. Not.

I found out that with Firefox, the spellcheck gives a little red line under my typos as I go along, but not in Safari.

Too bad I don't like Firefox in other ways, so it's not my usual browser.

Well, I've been assimilated and use IE, partly because it works really well and partly because Jim Borden works there.

Wayne.
Looks like authentication is made only by sessions, not cookies. Every time I leave cavechat idle I have to log in again, it is very annoying.

Or session cookies. Don't know what to tell you. I access Cavechat from four different computers in four places, using both IE and Firefox and I can't duplicate that. You have to accept cookies from caves.org, though.

session cookie is not a regular cookie, it expires at end of current session which lasts about an hour for cavechat.org.
For cookie you can set expiration date, hence "Log me on automatically each visit:" field. Once you mark it, cookie's expiration date is set for a month, or so. Now, session id is stored as a cookie with expiration date set to end current session, or, if cookies are disabled, then session id appears in address of a browser.
Nice trick: disable cookies, log in, and copy-paste complete address from one browser to another.
So be careful when sending link via email :)

All I know is when I go to Cavechat, I'm already logged in. Hours later, on another machine -- even with a different browser, I go to Cavechat and I'm still logged in. I don't know why you have to log in every time, other than something to do with your cookie and security settings. You do have "Log me in automatically" checked when you log in, right?

OK, for some reason it is not saving your cookie. Try these steps:

First, clear your cache..

Next, go into your temp internet files folder and delete any cookies that are from caves.org

Also:

Double-check the URL you are going to when you have log-in problems. It should be:

http://forums.caves.org/

or

http://cavechat.org

If it is:

http://www.caves.org/phpBB/

then you are at the old address.

http://www.caves.org takes you to the correct forum address.
