Excluding forums / New Forum Software Discussion

No offense to the folks in Huntsville or Chattanooga, but is there a way for me to get the posts on those forums excluded from my "show new posts" checK?

Not that I'm aware of, using "Show New Posts." It would require a "Show New Posts Except Such-And-Such Forum" button.

The other way would be to make the forums visible only to a certain user group but that would require maintaining a list of forum members who are also members of that grotto and would prevent potential new grotto members from seeing or posting.

The simple way is to use the main forum page and look at the newest posts that way and click on the latest post icon.

What about an "ignore this category" button?? Like the "ignore this poster" button? Or is that way complicated?

I did find an ignore/hide forums modification to the software that allows this and have installed it.

To ignore a forum, go into your profile and you will see a new section that lets you select a forum to ignore. I just tried it out and it seems to work. I don't know if you can select more than one forum at a time to ignore before re-saving your profile -- but I did try it individually and it worked for me. Please let me know if you have any problems with the modification.

It's a good thing. Thanks Wayne...but...suppose I want to reinstate an ignored forum. How might that be done?

You select the forum again in your profile and save your profile. It appears to be an on/off software switch.

BTW, I'm looking at another forum software package that allows you to collapse sections so you don't see them. It also has a calendar and other goodies that this software doesn't offer out of the box. Plus, we can move all our accounts and posts easily from phpBB to it.

The UKCaving forum converted from phpBB to it earlier this year, and you can see it in action on their site:

that's a pretty clean lookin forum they have there. As long as we can keep the "quick reply" option, I'm all for it!!!

It does and the quick reply also has spellcheck. Quick Reply can be "turned off" by individual users. Plus, you can easily embed pictures in posts and upload attachments.

SMF is nice, I've played with it a few times, and the forum I run moved away, we REALLY debated using it over PHPBB. PHPBB won out only because I already know it inside out.
