Postby Jim 23482 » Jul 10, 2006 1:51 pm

To the webmaster,
Just found this on an open forum. Thought you would like to see it.

http://www.caves.com/phpBB2/index.php

Looks alot like the NSS board.

You just found it? :? No offense, but http://www.caves.com (aka cavediggers) has had several DBs going for years. It's hardly a "copy-cat". It just looks new because it changed to its current phpBB2 format around the beginning of this year. One of the old-but-still-active versions is here - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cavediggers/

The new caves DB doesn't seem very active - perhaps because cavers are spending more time here instead?

And FYI - if you look around, you'll find a "US cavers" forum too...

It's true. phpBB software is one of the most widely used in the world, so you'll find it in a lot of places. Partly because it's modifiable and partly because it's open source (FREE). You can also see it used in caving forums at http://coloradocaves.org/phpBB2/ and http://www.british-caving.org.uk/phpbb2 and http://www.thecaves.co.uk/boards/

I've heavily modified the "stock" phpBB so it's more user friendly and has some bells and whistles that the standard phpBB doesn't -- all designed to make your visit more enjoyable.

I think this is a good place to add my thanks to everyone who has expressed support for the NSS Forum, the administrators and moderators. And I'd like to add my thanks to the moderators and to you -- for whom we all work to make this forum interesting.

Okay, okay. Most of the reading and posting are done here and on the OTR web site. It just surprised me that it looked so much like the NSS forum board.
