Dave Hughes New Book ???

Postby Larry E. Matthews » Feb 19, 2008 3:59 pm

I was reading the daily edition of TAG Net, and went to a slide show of last weekend's SERA Winter Business Meeting, posted on Flicker by Anne Elmore.

One of the photographs was of David Hughes and the caption was that Dave "spoke on his new book".

What new book? Is this book already out? Or is it close to being out? Where is it available and how much does it cost?

It's always exciting when a new cave book comes out.

Larry, this is what I found on the SERA website:

2008 SERA Winter Business Meeting
Hosted by the Dogwood City Grotto.
February 16th, 2008
Lafayette, GA
Bank of Lafayette Community Center

The program this year will be Mr. Dave Hughes presenting his recently published book, The Cave Art of Tom Culverwell. Also, Mr. Al Hess will be showing his stereo-photography (3-D images).

Dave did an excellent presentation about his new book at a DCG meeting a few months ago. The book looks fantastic!!

The Cave Art of Tom Culverwell by David Hughes is a history of the exploration of Schoolhouse Cave in German Valley WV complete with pictures (artwork) documenting the exploration and explorers.

The copyright date in the book is 2006. I think (but don't hold me to it) the price is 18.95. It is available through the NSS Bookstore. It is not a hard cover book but is nicely done.

Oh, OK. I already have that book, and it is excellent. It is right here in front of me on the back of my computer desk. I need to get it autographed !!!

I thought that perhaps he had another book coming out soon.

Thanks for the answers.

Larry - I heard mention at the SERA Winter Business Meeting that he was close to publishing a book about Bill Cuddinton and the developemnt of vertical caving in America. Reading the preliminary agenda for the March 2008 BOG meeting (bottom of page 2 & top of page 3)
http://www.caves.org/nss-business/agend ... 08-web.pdf it appears he is hoping for funding from the NSS.

That is what I was fishing for. I had heard a rumor that such a book was in the works and though that perhaps that was what he was talking about at the SERA Winter Business Meeting.

I can hardly wait to see it.

I will try to post one image of a Culverwell map that did not get into the book. The file is 125K, but the pixel size is bigger than you would think from the file size. Oh, oh -- just found out I can't upload a .TIF file. So here is a .PNG, more than 10 times as large.

David Hughes book about Bill Cuddington is now available !!!

I was checking out the NSS Bookstore web site today and spotted it at the top of the list. The title is "Vertical Bill" and the price to NSS members is $32, plus shipping.

I've already placed my order and am looking forward to getting the book.

I bought the book at the SERA/VAR the weekend of June 7. Finally got to start reading it on Friday. Finished it today. I would have read it faster but it was the weekend and I had commitments.

Great read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. We are very lucky we are exploring caves at a time when most of the equipment in use has been "proven" for years. Some of that early stuff was pretty scary.

I highly recommend it as an addition to any caver's library.
