"Cave Geology" and fossil identification

Postby sinukas » Dec 3, 2007 7:26 pm

Hello cavers!

I've been snooping around the NSS bookstore trying to find a book that will help with identifying fossils in the cave. I keep running across Art Palmer's "Cave Geology" but don't want to shell out the $40 unless I'm sure it'll help me identify more than the usual ol' crinoid stem.

Any suggestions?

Which cave?

I suspect that the book won't help. It's a speleology book, not a paleontology book. I can check my copy later (I don't have it at hand at the moment), but I'd think a fossil guide would be more useful than a cave geology book.

It's in Cave Mountain Cave near Franklin, WVA. Unfortunately I live in TAG and I didn't have a camera so I am trying to do the identification from memory :(

cave geology will NOT help you on fossils. buy a standard fossil guide.
I'm not scared of the dark, it's the things IN the dark that make me nervous. :)

Recommendation for a layman's fossil book: "Audubon Society field guide to North American Fossils." It is keyed by shape (!) and contains small geological maps of all the states and fossil photographs. As long as you don't need the species, this one'll do ya.
