Carlsbad cave expert Jim Goodbar featured in BLM children's activities book
[NSS member and Honorary Member Award recipient] Jim Goodbar's a rock star - literally. He studies caves and karsts for the Bureau of Land Management, and he's been making headlines nearly since the day he started work 35 years ago. In 1978, Goodbar discovered a section of caves in the Guadalupe Mountains. Inside the cave, he found a skeleton later determined to be a 16,000-year-old short-faced bear. It was the first full skeleton of the species found in the American Southwest.
"The bones were so huge, I thought it was a cow. I wondered how a cow got all the way up there. But then I saw the huge claws and teeth."
Today, Goodbar is prominently featured in a recently released children's activities book on fossils and geology published by the BLM.
