Sten battery repair?

Postby STLCaver » Mar 12, 2009 5:18 pm

My cord for the sten battery has become separated where it goes into the battery. I can see both wires are bare. The rubber casing is cracked and the isulation around the wires is cracked. Anybody got any ideas about how I can fix it? Can I just peel back the casing and put plastidip or something on it? I am no electrician, but I have heard that the Lith Ion batterys can short out? I dont want to explode myself. Thanks in advance...

If it is just the cord its self, you can buy shrink wrap, slide it over the wiring, heat it up with a lighter/heat tun/maybe a hair dryer, to shrink it around the wiring. I am not familiar with the battery pack on the sten light, but the actual plastic housing is cracked that houses the battery? does sten service these? Do they sell parts?

Maybe post a pic of the problem and we could better help you. Thats all I can do for now.

Try "liquid electrical tape".

Because I spent a lot of time searching for it, I'll save you some time.

The "Liquid Electrical Tape" is easily found in the automotive electrical section of Wal-Mart. You have two options: a can with a brush (like an old rubber cement jar), or the spray on. The can is best for making a thick rubbery goopy mess that will protect your battery.

The product that I've used to cover both of my Sten Light batteries is called Plasti Dip. You can find it at Lowes with the painting supplies. Here is the link to the manufacturer's website:

Both Plasti-Dip and Liquid Electrical Tape are made by the same folks are are nearly identical products. The electrical tape goes on a little thinner than the plasti-dip. The plasti-dip is more rubbery and thick.

For my Serv-Light Battery packs, I used the liquid tape first and then many coats of plastidip to ensure that my battery packs are protected from water and general abuse.

The plasti-dip product is not recommended by the mfg for direct use on electrical equipment.
