New use for STEN-hunting (warning, a little gore)

Postby shibumi » Nov 17, 2008 8:32 am

I've found that my STENs are really good for walking in the woods at night because
they provide great contrast and color renditions. Well, Saturday I was out deer hunting
and got a buck around dusk. I followed the blood trail and was having difficulty
seeing it because the leaves were wet. It was a lung shot and the deer died quickly,
but it managed to run about 75 yards first. I found the buck pretty quickly, but mostly
by tracking the disturbed leaves. I went back to the house to get the tractor and when I
returned I had my helmet and STENs. When I lit up the woods around the deer the
blood trail leapt out like it was a neon sign! I was impressed at the contrasts, more
than even daylight would have provided.

Your gory description offends me. For restitution, I think you need to send me a small package of venison tenderloin. :big grin:

Heh. The last time I tried shipping venison it didn't work out so well...

Come caving sometime though and I promise you a dinner with some medallions.

I have noticed the color contrast abilities of the Sten in-cave as well. Yellow flowstone especially seems to jump out at me. Subtle yellow and orange colors in gypsum are very well illuminated by the Sten. I can always tell when it is the first time I have re-visited a passage with the Sten (when I had been there previously with inferior lights). The colors come alive! So much in fact that I have at times worried that the Sten might not be showing "natural" colors. Then I remember that the "natural" color would be pitch black!
