What's the general opinion on the Princeton Tec EOS? It gets pretty good reviews on Flashlight Reviews at http://www.flashlightreviews.com/review ... ec_eos.htm .

Looks like a decent group caving equipment cache option to me...

My grotto has five of them that we use for loaners. They are simple and small/light enough for first time cavers. We have been pleased with their performance of the last two years. It is a good value.

I can't tell - does the EOS have a flip-up diffuser like some of the petzl single 1 watt led units do?

No, it does not have a diffuser.

I essentially use my EOS as a primary light most of the time. It does very well when wet, unlike my APEX. As far as I concerned, the eos has only one problem - I uses 3 AAA and has a runtime on high of only 2 hours, plus about 4 hours of usable light. On medium, the runtime goes up to about 10 hours, and on low over 40 hours. It also has a spot type beam pattern, but I don't really have a problem with that.

I think I'll pick one up and take it on a few trips to check it out.

I have put new LED stars in a few of these.
More light, same run time, larger hot spot.
This is easier to mod than the apex too.

My grotto has a whole bunch of EOSes for backup lights. They work very well. You can see far. They don't provide as many hours of light as the Princeton Tec Quad, but they are good for spotting. Also, like the Quad, they have excellent water resistance. In my experience, the Quad and Eos are more waterproof than the Apex.

Try using the Eos, and you will see why they didn't put on a diffuser. The Eos has an excellent balance between spotting and spread.

Actually, I just bout enough Eos and Quad units to make a 3-light package for our young cavers at work. We do a bit of water crawling and large passages so this setup should fit the bill nicely.
