The latest and greatest caving headlamp is now available! The StenLight S7 has been in the works for some time; it was developed by cavers for caving, and has been exhaustively field-tested. The result: the brightest, smallest, lightest, most rugged headlamp yet devised.

Well, I reckon my syntax got a little jumbled there. Guess you'll just have to go look for yourself.

Very nice light!!

If I hadn't just got a new FoxFury Performance Tacticle Edition light I would be interested in this one.

It's nice to know manufactures are coming out with more lights with cavers in mind.

What a light this is! I just posted a trip report and review of the lamp at:

Can't wait to use my Sten again!

Thanks for the review, Chris. Any chance you could post some beam shots of the 'donut'?

Yes, I'll try it tonight. I really think I made too big a deal about it, however. Maybe it was exasperated by the fog int he cave or something. I think my brain may have adjusted to it. Still, if it annoys me, I may play with swapping collimators one day...or my brain. Still, it sure beat the awful beam pattern of my FX5!

Awesome review. I especially appreciated the "disassembly" photos. My wife has promised me a Stenlight for Christmas, but I don't know if I can wait that long!

Jay:

I can relate! I nagged Alex to death to get one as quickly as possible. Haven't been this fascinated with a piece of gear since I bought my first carbide lamp when I was 12. I just can't put it down!

Scott:

I have recently posted a beam pattern at http://www.pbase.com/darklightimagery/stenlight. As I said earlier. I got used to the strange artifact pretty quick. Still, I ordered some new collimators today from http://www.ledsupply.com. They (the L2-OP models) just drop right in. I'll experiment with various combinations and see what I like best. I did discover that the 5 degree SPOT model is the culprit. I may see if the 25 degree model spreads the light out more to fill in the shadow some.

Thanks for the beam shot. How far was the light from the screen? What's the spread of the beam in that shot? I would love to see the results of the new collimators, if you get a chance.

Scott:

The lamp was about two feet behind, and the camera three feet in front of the screen. Not very scientific, but it was the only way I could capture it. I'll post images of the new collimators as they arrive.

Additional StenLight beam shots

I just uploaded some additional beam shots for my StenLight.

I'd have to say that, without cave testing, it's a trade off. The 5 degree collimator is definitely creating the shadow donut I don't like, but it has "throw". Right now, I am trying 15/15 degree collimators. Nice wide light and still has significant distant illumination. Unfortunately, I won't know what I like best until I can try it side by side with a pals stock StenLight. Stay tuned!
