i use a mammut skywalker helmet and i love it. its way more comfortable than the ones by black diamond and petzel and its cheaper than those too. only by 5 bux but hey its still cheaper. i payed 55 bux for mine. check it out at

I only paid 50 for my Black Diamond Half Dome at REI

Has anyone used a camp silver star for caving I have not seen one in person so I don't know if they would be good for caving but they have headlight clips and is pretty light so let me know what you think.

My unqualified, unsolicited opinion, relative to the heavier helmets (and I'm sure to get set straight on this) is this: Wear what's comfortable. If a rock is big enough or falls far enough to crack your Elios but not your Roc, it'll probably break your neck regardless of how your helmet fares.

Dr. Beaner once said that a helmet's main purpose is to increase the chances they can identify the body after a rock fall. Grim, but probably true.

Sorry 'bout that, but that's really the way to get gear. The local student grotto got Princeton-Tec Coronas for $30 each by using Price-Grabber and similar sites that find the equipment you're searching for, often for way cheaper than the caving suppliers. You may not always be able to find what you're looking for, but it doesn't hurt to look.

And NZcaver once said a helmet's main purpose is something you screw/clip/duct tape your headlamp onto... which also serves as a buffer between your cranium and the cave that you bump into hundreds of times every trip.

Oh, and I hear those MSA hardhats are good for caving too.

I just Purchased the Petzl Elios for $53 at Northern Mountain supply.....Should be here in a day or two.....I hope that was a decent choice.....

I mainly look for light helmets because I tend to add so many things to it lamps, cameras, and such. It usually ends up being pretty heavy in terms of headwear.

Just my opinion- Get the Roc, you won't be sorry.
