iv just posted a message about the petzl stop and i have come across another device called a petzl i'd its on an industrial site http://abacus-ise.co.uk/shop/petzl-id-p-56.html has any one used one of these aparently the are better for ascending/belaying? bit pricey tho!

The I'D is a nice device, but it's not designed for caving. It's has a complex sealed clutch mechanism, which I would hate to see fail/lock up when it gets filled with fine cave grit.

The industrial rope access people like the I'D because it's easy and relatively idiot-resistant. It's probably the only descender you can fully lock off without tying/looping the tail of the rope around anything. See here for more info on the I'D in another thread.
