Thanks caverat, I'll check them out. Do you have any idea of the cost?

Scott, I've been thinking used, but have a limited time. I'm moving in about a month, and would like to get a cap on there by then since I won't have my van to move things that I don't want to risk getting wet. I've been keeping an eye on the classifieds.

Thanks, both of you.

Well, unless I happen to find something in the classified that fits, I found a place locally that would custom make a wedge for me for a reasonable price. Thanks for the input fellas....

Can't wait to take her for the maiden voyage.

Right I don't have a truck, but what I do is this:

Either stay in a nice, warm centrally heated club house.

Put up my large 3 bedroomed tent and share the space with other folks. :tent:

OR, if i'm really pushed:

Take all my caving kit out of the back of my station wagon and put it on the front seats, then, blowup my double airmatress and fold down the rear seats get out my good thick 4 season sleeping bag and kip in the back of my car......In the morning dependent on distance to the cave I'll either stash all my sleeping kit in the clubhouse or de-construct it and put the car back to a 5 seater to transport myself and others to the cave.

No worries, no hassle AND a good night's kip :alarm:
Madam in the morning I will be sober, but you will still be ugly.

I use my pickup truck shell as a camper, too. Any ideas on the best way to carry a bicycle along?

Heres a deal that might work for you. they have ones that also go into the hitch receiver. there are other contraptions out there.

Those are the kind I've been lookingat, but it seems that I won't be able to open the tailgate with it attached - and MAYBE I'll be able to open the top rear of the shell. Do they attach to the trailer hitch?

Sounds like you need a macrac or the US version....

http://www.macrac.com.au/BikeCarrier_MR3D.html

We had one it attached to your tow bar (bolted on with the same bolt that holds the tow ball) there is a little clip so that if you hold the clip in and lift the rack up you can then tilt the rack backwards which allows you to get at the tail gate / boot / whatever. BTW you were still able to use the towball for a trailer at the same time as using the rack. Should you need to take the rack off you were able to detach the main part of the rack and leave just the lower section attached to the tow ball.

Mac Rac looks good. Has it been perfectly satisfactory? I hope there's a US equivalent. Searching Mac Rack only leads to Australian links.

I can't fault our Macrac it's been in use all the time we were kids and I used it for a while it's now moved on to my sister who's using it.... all up I'd guess it's been going strong for 18 - 20 years.

Only issue might be it pretty difficult to make the bikes secure (unable to be stolen) whilst they are on the rack.

But it says this in their advertisement:

"- Lockable: The pin under the base plate has provision for a padlock to lock the entire rack to the car and the top plate also has holes for a padlock to lock the bikes to the rack."

Anybody know if an equivalent to this is sold in the US? But the place to go with these questions of mine is bikeforums.net.
