I always keep a couple handwarmers in my backpack. they weigh practically nothing and when it gets really cold (near my bag's limit) I can rip one open and put it under my top. they last most of the night. there are several manufacturers, all with various life spans. they are not reusable, but they are pretty inexpensive. the best part is, they're designed to be held close to the skin, burns and injury only occur if you eat the warmers.

walmart sells a cheep version in their (pathetic) camping and hunting section. I have found those to work just fine.
other more expensive brands tend to last longer. but you pay for it.

but the best way to make sure that you're warm at night is to have a sleeping bag that is rated for the temperatures you will be experiencing. always err on the side of caution.
