Most of the newer crafted beers still require an opener, but the mainstay production ones from the big breweries are screwed on (or up).

If it's good beer you'll need a bottle opener if it's crap well who cares.

Ahh... doesn't take much to steer cavers' thoughts towards beer.

Still trying to decide which knife to get... or should I get one at all?

If I do, it will live on my harness with my small collection of just-in-case items (Prusik loops, Tibloc, small pulley, spare glove). I don't anticipate using one very often, but of course it would get dragged everywhere my harness goes.

I'm leaning towards either the small Petzl Spatha, the Trango Pirana, or the Benchmade Rescue Hook.

Comments, suggestions, advice... anyone?

Take a look at the Z KNIFE from Para Gear for just $6.00.

http://www.paragear.com/templates/parachutes.asp?group=388&level=1

An inexpensive little knife ideal for cutting cords during malfunctions or entanglements. Comes with its own pouch which can be slipped onto chest strap or belly band.
Shipping Weight: 4 oz.

The web image is not to great. The knife is in the middle. It is about 3" long.

Berta has been using one for years and turned me on to them. She had it for cutting away long hair, webbing etc. that might get in her rack. The small safety hook has to small of an opening to allow 10mm or 11mm rope to get cut by the razor style blade. But if you do NEED to cut rope, the plastic tip of the hook and be broken off to allow access to the blade. A cheap and light weight knife that I don't care if I loose or if it get trashed in a cave.

Thanks for the advice, Tim. :kewl:

I think I found a better picture of it. Does this look like the same knife (for twice the price)?

Well, umm just speaking for meself ... I care if you LOSE the knife in the cave... gotta keep track of them ya know?

Seriously, a knife with a hook blade is a good idea, as accidental cuttings of the wrong thing can be reduced. But then again paying close attention to everything cuts that sort of nonsense down dramatically.
But with the hook you're to be sure to be cutting exactly what you want and only what you want. I think it's a great idea for cavers/rescuers.

In all my years of caving (started in 1986) don't think I've ever LOST anything in a cave. I was just attempting to show a loss of a $6.00 knife is no big deal.

I carry two knifes. one is a letherman wave(goes everyware I go all the time, cant live without it) inside my pack. The other is a caribener knife made by Kershaw for National Geographic. It has a locking gate, standerd and philips tip and a bottle opener. I haven't figured out how to post a picture or I would. I'm not too old to learn

Well it was just a friendly nudge in the ribs.... wasn't meant to cause an :argue: ... but I'm sure we all knew what you meant. I've lost a number of knives on the hikes to/from caves and they were of the inexpensive variety... and yeah no great loss. :waving:

I care a small winchester 3" serrated folding knife in pack at all times. When I do hikes I carry a 7 1/2 inch partially serrated k-bar which has come in handy many times in combatting mutant beer caps. :boxing:

I'm still trying to lose my fear of tight spaces. If I do, anyone who finds it can keep it. :looking:
