My July 10th post above got a response on July 19th - only mine was 2009 and the response was 2010 - one year later.

:)

Anyway, all my hybrids are still going strong.

Okay, I have gotten a lot more experience with rechargable batteries and my Maha smart charger.

Most of my 2,000mAH Enloops are now about 1,900mAH after I refresh and analyze. They've not had a lot of use. Is this decline expected?

My Maha generally shows something like... 1,905mAH, 253 minutes, 1.46 volts.

How should I group the batteries together? By mAH? By time? By volts?

group them by mAH as that is the actual capacity of the batteries.

1900mAH is typical and good for the eneloops. That is within 5% of their specified rating.

Actually 1900mAh is Eneloop's minimum rated capacity, so they still meet or exceed that. Note that the MAHA slightly underestimates capacity also.

Great thread!

The best thing I found with the Maha C9000 is it performs an “impedance check” before it charges.
The instructions wrote:Typically alkaline and extremely aged battery will fail this test. For a rechargeable battery, it is recommended for the battery to be discarded.

I retired more that half of my rechargeables because they failed the test. This is probably why those old batteries were getting pretty hot when charging on a not-so-smart charger.
Balincaguin comes from the Zambal phrase, "Bali lan caguing" meaning "house of bats."
This was the former name of the Municipality of Mabini, Pangasinan, when it was part of the Province of Zambales (of Mt. Pinatubo Volcano fame).

I've been playing a lot with my Enloops. Went caving in Mexico last week. On the way home I packed all of my batteries in my carry on luggage, including a few Lithium batteries.

As it turns out, you are not allowed to have more than 4 batteries in your possession when you exit Mexico. I had 24 Enloop AA batteries confiscated at the boarding gate.

What?? :yikes: Why? You brought them in with you, right? Corrupt Mexican officials need batteries?

Maybe where you live. Where I am right now, they're in the 60's. Where I'm heading, many caves are around freezing.

I've been through AR, PA, VA and WV... they always seem about the same. maybe I should take a thermometer. But what temperature would be considered cold that would cause batteries to preform at a lesser efficiency.?

Below ~freezing for alkaline, ~20F for Eneloops, ~ -30F for lithium primary

Thanks Marduke. Would NiMHs be in the same category as Eneloops??

Yes. Eneloops are NiMH.
Darkness is impossible to remember. Consequently, cavers desire to return to the unseen depths where they have just been.
Darkness never satisfies. Darkness cannot satisfy. Especially if it takes something away, which it almost invariably does.

Mostly. Eneloops have a tweaked chemistry that gives somewhat superior cold performance.

Interesting, I didn't know that eneloops were better when cold. Can you link to tests? How do they compare to rayovac hybrids? (I run duraloops and duracell hybrid re-labels.)
